McDonald’s Burgers Named Worst in America in Consumer Reports’ New Fast-Food Survey

KFC and Sbarro among the lowest-scoring chains overall, Chick-fil-A earns high marks; Plus, the best & worst chains for value, healthy options, most delectable fare.

McDonald's Burgers Named Worst in America in Consumer Reports' New Fast-Food SurveyYonkers, NY  (Restaurant News Release)  The burgers that made McDonald’s famous have been deemed the worst-tasting of all the major U.S burger chains by Consumer Reports’ readers. And when it comes to the most satisfying fast-food dining experience, biggest isn’t always best ? KFC and Sbarro earned some of the lowest scores in the survey.

The results of Consumer Reports fast-food survey, which are featured in the August 2014 issue and at http://www.ConsumerReports.org, are based on responses from 32,405 subscribers about more than 96, 200 dining experiences at 65 hamburger, Asian, pizza, sandwich, chicken, and Mexican fast-food and fast-casual chains.

“More and more, food quality ? not just low price ? is emerging as a deciding-factor for many Americans when choosing where to spend their dining dollars,” said Tod Marks, senior projects editor for Consumer Reports. “Strong regional players and slightly more upscale fast-casual chains like Chipotle are giving the heavy-hitters in the fast-food business a wake-up call. And our survey clearly shows the big guys need to respond.”

Chicken from Chick-fil-A, was deemed among the most delicious; the chain also received the highest satisfaction score in a category that includes KFC, Boston Market, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, and others. This national chain also stood out for cleanliness of the dining area and polite and speedy service.

Consumer Reports’ fast-food Ratings include many superb dining options. National chains such as Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Smashburger, and Fuddruckers, received high scores for the tastiness of their burgers.

The study further shows that cheap food isn’t necessarily a bargain. Only around one of five respondents thought their meal offered excellent value. Del Taco, Little Caesars, and Papa Murphy’s Take ‘N’ Bake Pizza were at the top of the list at delivering bang for the buck, while Burger King, Church’s, KFC, Panda Express, and Sbarro landed at the bottom.

Despite many restaurants’ best efforts to include healthier items such as soup, salads, and grilled-rather-than fried items on their menus, Consumer Reports’ survey revealed that most fast-food diners aren’t concerned about dieting when they eat out. Only 20 percent of respondents said they consider the availability of healthful menu options when choosing a restaurant; just 19 percent said they ordered a healthful fare during their most recent restaurant visit. Nearly all of Subway’s and Jason’s Deli’s diners said those restaurants offered plenty of healthy menu options while far fewer Little Caesars and White Castle diners felt the same.

The full report from Consumer Reports fast-food survey is featured in the August 2014 issue of the magazine and is available at http://www.ConsumerReports.org.

Boston Market Unveils Tax Day Deal Chicken MealGolden, CO  (Restaurant News Release)  Tax season can be a stressful time, even for those expecting a healthy refund. The fast-casual restaurant chain is offering a “Tax Day Deal Chicken Meal” on April 15, when all guests can receive two half-chicken individual meals for just $10.40.

Boston Market Offers Health Conscious Consumers More Than 100 Meals under 550 Calories

Home Style Chain Meals among the Lowest Calorie Options in the Fast-Casual Category

Boston Market Offers Health Conscious Consumers More Than 100 Meals under 550 CaloriesGolden, CO  (Restaurant News Release)  It’s been 2014 for a week, and if you’re like most people, that resolution to eat healthier this year is already starting to feel a little too ambitious. Boston Market is helping consumers stick to their goal with the announcement of the “Meals Under 550 Calories” menu, containing more than 100 options that make watching your waistline anything but boring.

The low-calorie menu is one of the largest of its kind among fast-casual restaurants, and includes a variety of delicious and satisfying entrees and sides for guests to choose from. Offerings range from Individual Meals featuring Boston Market’s signature Rotisserie Chicken to the restaurant’s popular Market Bowls.

“We know our guests are busy, and finding a restaurant that offers satisfying, nutritious meals, outside of a traditional salad offering, can be challenging,” said George Michel, CEO of Boston Market (a.k.a. “The Big Chicken”). “At Boston Market we believe a healthy meal can still be a great tasting, filling one, and our ‘Meals Under 550 Calories’ menu is designed to help guests enjoy lower calorie options that taste great.”

Other health-conscious initiatives that Boston Market will feature in January include:

  • Nutrition Calculator – An interactive Nutrition Calculator allows guests to custom-build Boston Market meals online and obtain their nutritional values. The calculator is available at www.BostonMarket.com.
  • Allergen Menu – An Allergen Menu feature helps guests with dietary restrictions (such as gluten intolerance) identify the menu items they can eat. It too is available at www.BostonMarket.com.
  • “35 Ways in 35 Days”– Each day for the next five weeks, Boston Market will feature one meal from its “Meals Under 550 Calories” menu on its website and Facebook and Twitter pages, along with a downloadable snapshot of all of the featured meals.

Boston Market has worked steadfastly over the last several years to create more nutritious menu items. In 2012, it removed salt shakers from tables in all its restaurants while committing to reduce sodium levels in all Boston Market signature items by 20 percent, and in all menu items by 15 percent, by the end of 2014. Boston Market is also a proud participant in the National Restaurant Association’s “Kids Live Well” program, and a strategic partner of the United States Department of Agriculture’s “MyPlate” program.

In addition to helping consumers eat healthier, Boston Market is also assisting those who resolved to save money in 2014. The restaurant will feature a “Complete 2 for $20” deal from now through the end of March. Specifically, for $20, guests can enjoy two Individual Meals with two sides, two desserts and two fountain drinks.

Boston Market Holiday Survey Finds Consumers Skimp on Christmas Dinner Spending to Splurge on Presents

Boston Market Holiday Survey Finds Consumers Skimp on Christmas Dinner Spending to Splurge on Presents

Home Style Chain Provides Affordable Solutions for Holiday Meals

Boston Market Holiday Survey Finds Consumers Skimp on Christmas Dinner Spending to Splurge on PresentsGolden, CO  (Restaurant News Release)  If you cut corners on the Christmas turkey to stock up on presents, you’re not alone. A new survey conducted by Boston Market finds more than one-third of consumers confess to skimping on the Christmas meal so they can focus their cash on gifts.

The survey also found that more than half of consumers will put prepared foods on their Christmas table. In a statistic that will surely put doubt in many young minds about Grandma’s “secret family recipe” for stuffing, a full third of consumers said they would quietly take credit for dishes they did not actually prepare.

Finally, it found that not all Christmas meals actually happen on Christmas Day: One-fourth of all households will have their main holiday meal on Christmas Eve.

With a wide variety of Christmas dinner options to feed anywhere from 4 to 12 people – and each of them under $100 – Boston Market provides solutions for families who would rather spend their time and money on what’s under the tree than what’s on the table.

“The Christmas season is full of so many experiences – gift shopping, holiday parties, relatives coming to visit – that finding time to plan a special meal for your loved ones can become a challenge,” said Sara Bittorf, Chief Brand Officer of Boston Market. “At Boston Market, we’ve created an entire menu of Christmas favorites to help you spend as much time as possible with your family while still feeling good about the meal you serve your guests.”

The holiday season is the busiest time of year for the fast-casual restaurant. Sales on Thanksgiving Day were up 500 percent compared to a usual Thursday, and Boston Market served more than 1.2 million guests on Thanksgiving Day alone, far exceeding all expectations.

A variety of holiday meal options are available, including:

  • Oven to Table Holiday Meals: Whether you prefer spiral sliced ham, turkey breast, or a little bit of both, Boston Market handles the main course, sides and all the fixings – including dessert. All hosts need is two hours to heat and serve.
  • Hot & Ready Catered Buffets: Whether you need a holiday meal for the family or the office, Boston Market will take care of every detail, and even deliver the feast.
  • A la Carte: Whether you have unexpected extra guests, need to pick up a pumpkin pie on the way to grandma’s house or are simply pressed for time in the kitchen, Boston Market has all the sides and desserts you need for a worry-free holiday.
  • Christmas Day Meal: Select Boston Market restaurants will be open on Christmas Day, and will offer an individual meal – including hand carved ham served with two sides, cornbread and a slice of pie – for only $10.99.

Boston Market has also partnered with Julie Benz, actress (Defiance, Dexter, Desperate Housewives) and avid cook and entertainer, to develop holiday tips and easy-to-prepare recipes incorporating home style sides from Boston Market.

To help with last-minute planning, Oven to Table (while supplies last) and catering orders for Christmas Day will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 23. In addition to online ordering via www.bostonmarket.com, orders can also be placed by calling 866-977-9090.

Boston Market Research Indicates Non-Traditional Dishes Will Round Out Thanksgiving Menus This Year

Boston Market Research Indicates Non-Traditional Dishes Will Round Out Thanksgiving Menus This Year

Holiday Experts Expect to Serve More than 1 Million Customers on Thanksgiving

Boston Market Research Indicates Non-Traditional Dishes Will Round Out Thanksgiving Menus This YearGolden, CO  (Restaurant News Release)  While turkey remains the most popular Thanksgiving entrée, served as a main course in 89 percent of all households, a new survey from Boston Market found that a few surprising dishes will round out menus this year. Specifically, lasagna will be served as a main course in 12 percent of households, while 10 percent will also serve a vegetarian entrée.

Boston Market makes every day Thanksgiving, and this year, the home style food chain anticipates that it will serve more than 1 million customers on Thanksgiving Day alone. In fact, all 460 of its locations will be open on Thanksgiving Day providing guests with home style Thanksgiving meals and solutions for all of their holiday food needs.

“The Thanksgiving meal is so much more than just food – it’s about creating memories, and it’s not something to take a risk on,” said George Michel, CEO of Boston Market (a.k.a. “The Big Chicken”). “At Boston Market, these holiday foods are our everyday staples, so you can trust us to make the food that everyone loves. Our goal is to make sure our guests’ holiday meals go smoothly and we look forward to serving many customers on November 28 and beyond.”

The holiday season is the busiest time of the year at Boston Market. Last year alone, the home style chain served more than 3 million pounds of mashed potatoes and more than 122 million mini cornbread loaves in November and December.

Additional research from Boston Market indicates that beyond turkey, stuffing is the MUST HAVE item for a Thanksgiving meal. In total, 33 percent rate stuffing as their desired food choice after turkey. The survey also found that people anticipate spending nearly $30 less on Thanksgiving dinner in 2013 – $133.07 – than what they actually spent in 2012 – $160.40 – for an average of 10 guests.

Boston Market is offering guests a variety of holiday meal options this season, including:

  • Oven to Table Holiday Meals: Whether it’s meals for four or 12, turkey or ham, Boston Market handles all the cooking and seasoning. All hosts need is two hours to heat and serve. This year, diners can purchase a whole roasted turkey meal for 12 – including one whole turkey, spinach artichoke dip, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry walnut relish, vegetable stuffing, dinner rolls and two whole pies – for only $94.99.
  • Hot & Ready Catered Buffets: Whether you need a holiday meal for the family or the office, Boston Market will take care of every detail, and even deliver the feast.
  • A la Carte: Whether you burned the green bean casserole, need to pick up a pumpkin pie on the way to grandma’s house or are simply pressed for time in the kitchen, Boston Market has all the sides and desserts you need for a worry-free holiday.
  • Thanksgiving Day Meal: For those planning to dine out or need last-minute side items, all Boston Market restaurants will be open on Thanksgiving Day (hours vary by location) and offer holiday favorites like the Thanksgiving Day Meal, which features roasted turkey breast with two home style sides, freshly baked cornbread and a slice of apple or pumpkin pie for $10.99.

To assist guests during Thanksgiving week, each Boston Market location will also designate two crew members as Holiday Ambassadors. These knowledgeable ambassadors will welcome guests and help ensure they have a pleasant in-restaurant experience.

Boston Market has also partnered with Julie Benz, actress, and (Defiance, Dexter, Desperate Housewives) avid cook and entertainer, to develop holiday tips and easy-to-prepare recipes incorporating home style sides from Boston Market.

To help with last minute planning, Oven to Table (while supplies last) and catering orders for Thanksgiving Day will be accepted until 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27. In addition to online ordering via www.bostonmarket.com, orders can also be placed by calling 866-977-9090.

Boston Market’s Chief Brand Officer, Sara Bittorf, Discusses First New Restaurant in Seven Years on the Heels of Major Brand Turnaround

Boston Market's Chief Brand Officer, Sara Bittorf, Discusses First New Restaurant in Seven Years on the Heels of Major Brand Turnaround

Sara Bittorf, Chief Brand Officer,
Boston Market

Golden, CO  (Restaurant News Release)  Over the past three years, Boston Market®, leader in the fast-casual restaurant segment popular for its juicy, slow-roasted rotisserie chicken and home style favorite side dishes, has experienced an exceptional turnaround. The consistent positive growth has led to the first new restaurant opening in seven years. On location in Hialeah, Florida, Boston Market’s Chief Brand Officer, Sara Bittorf, discusses how the brand’s 35 consecutive months of positive sales and the implementation of an elevated guest experience have led to this exciting point in the brand’s history. The Hialeah location is hosting a grand opening event on Friday, October 11 to celebrate its arrival in the South Florida market.

The following are excerpts from an interview with Bittorf during her recent appearance in Hialeah. To see the full interview, visit: http://chiefchats.com/boston-markets-chief-brand-officer-sara-bittorf-discusses-turnaround-and-new-restaurant/.

What changes have been made to the restaurant that the guest will notice?

“The first thing guests will notice when they come to this location is the décor package. It’s been contemporized with fresh cues all over the restaurant to demonstrate our position on fresh ingredients and high quality. They’ll be able to see our signature fresh, never frozen chicken being cooked in our rotisserie ovens all day long. They’ll notice a brand new service line, which is intended to help the customer get served a little more quickly with more customization.”

How did you log such an impressive series of positive store sales?

“We’ve had 35 months of positive comp store sales, of which we’re very proud. It started as a result of the enhanced experience that we introduced in 2010, and I think it’s been reinforced by the execution at the restaurant level. Our employees have played a major role in this turnaround, and the positive momentum continues to build on itself. When the excitement goes up, the service is better, and when the service is better, the customers respond. We have a lot of innovation in the future that we’re getting ready to introduce.”

How do you plan to reinvent the Boston Market brand?

“We have a great brand that was built on this idea of not just putting dinner on the table, but making a mom or a dad feel good about that meal and providing a great family experience. We want to bring the brand back to its former glory and bring that emotional connection back to our customers. The second task is getting the word out that Boston Market is back. We’re back and we’re back in a big way. We’re back with new products; we’re back with an enhanced experience. We’re open for business and we’re inviting people in to our restaurants.”

You haven’t opened a restaurant for the last 7 years. Why now? Why South Florida?

“Boston Market is opening our first new restaurant in seven years now because we’re positioned for growth. We’ve had almost three years of positive comp sales; we’re financially healthy again and we are ready to start building restaurants that drive people in to experience a great Boston Market meal. South Florida’s always been a great market for Boston Market. The people here love our product, and the business that we do here is very strong. We feel like we have a lot to learn from this market and a lot of business to do.”

What does the future look like for Boston Market?

“This is the first of many planned development opportunities for us, and we’re looking at various scenarios. We want to be where people are and where they can enjoy a great Boston Market experience, like airports, universities, neighborhood malls. All of those are on the table.”

The newest restaurant is located at 1001 W. 49th Street in Hialeah, Florida. The grand opening celebration is on Friday, October 11 at 10:30 a.m. There will be entertainment, games, and prizes, along with an appearance by Boston Market’s CEO, George Michel.

Boston Market St. Louis Style Ribs Spur Double Digit Growth

Boston Market St. Louis Style Ribs Spur Double Digit Growth

Fast Casual Chain Surpasses Sales Expectations with Ribs, Cites Innovation and Quality as Keys to Success

Boston Market St. Louis Style Ribs Spur Double Digit GrowthGolden, CO  (Restaurant News Release)  Since adding St. Louis Style ribs to its menu in April, Boston Market has seen sales at its restaurants increase by more than 16 percent, with ribs accounting for more than 18 percent of all customer orders. Additionally, total customer transactions are up 8 percent versus this time last year. These increases come at a time when many in the fast casual industry have cited a slowdown in their business. As a result of the demand, Boston Market is adding ribs to its menu permanently in all locations.

“Demand for St. Louis Style ribs at our restaurants has exceeded our greatest expectations,” said George Michel (a.k.a. “The Big Chicken”), CEO of Boston Market. “I’ve worked in the restaurant industry for over 40 years and I’ve never seen a new product make such a sweeping impact. We ran through inventory for the entire eight-week promotion in about three weeks.”

Since the ribs launch, customers, on average, are spending $12 for an order of ribs at Boston Market compared to less than $10 for chicken, turkey or meatloaf. St. Louis Style ribs at Boston Market – available as individual meals with two sides and homemade cornbread – are priced between $10.99 and $12.99, and half of all ribs meals are being purchased as a combo with rotisserie chicken for $12.99. The ribs also are available a la carte, in family meals, and through catering.

“While other category competitors are advertising value menus with low price points, we focused on innovation, a great guest experience and product quality to allow us to offer a more premium product,” said Michel. “Clearly, this strategy is paying off. Diners at Boston Market know that they may choose from an array of delicious menu items, all priced affordably, and all made with the highest quality.”

The launch of St. Louis Style ribs continues the strong turnaround at Boston Market. The company has posted 34 consecutive months of positive comp sales. Additionally, the company is preparing to open its first new restaurants in six years.

“Boston Market introduced fast casual more than 27 years ago by taking the ‘fast’ from fast food and the quality from casual restaurants,” said Sara Bittorf, chief brand officer, Boston Market. “Clearly we’re proving the strength of this idea with our ribs.”

Beloved Home Style Restaurant Chain Featured in New Episode of Emmy Award-Winning CBS Reality Series to be Broadcast Friday, Feb. 1

Boston Market Chief Brand Officer Works the Frontlines on CBS's "Undercover Boss"Golden, CO  (Restaurant News Release)  Sara Bittorf, Chief Brand Officer for Boston Market – a home style restaurant chain with more than 460 locations – will share her challenging and at times emotional experience on the hit CBS series “Undercover Boss” on Friday, February 1, from 8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT. Bittorf, who has served as Chief Brand Officer of Boston Market since early 2012, describes her time undercover in the kitchens of several Boston Market restaurants as remarkable.

“I wanted to go through this process to learn what Boston Market is doing right, and where we could find additional ways to improve,” said Bittorf. “I was thrilled to witness some of our company’s finest people going so far above and beyond for our brand. What I didn’t expect was to also learn about myself in the process.”

Since joining Boston Market nearly one year ago, Bittorf has been singularly focused on developing consumer campaigns and new products to help connect the brand to key audiences. The decision to go undercover allowed her to change her focus from media and consumers to the employees and systems those same consumers experienced every day.

“This experience is one that has already been instrumental in our plans to grow and improve the quality of our restaurants,” said Bittorf. “We plan to leverage every single takeaway from my time on ‘Undercover Boss’ at every level of our organization.”

Jobs that she participated in during the show include cashier, drive-thru attendant and carver. Since the show was taped, the executive team at Boston Market has created an Innovation Fund to solicit employee ideas and a program to retrain staff on proper utilization of an existing system to ensure employee breaks are taken, even during busy times. Bittorf, who is left-handed, is also committed to exploring ways of making processes more “lefty-friendly,” since they are currently designed for right-handed people.

“Undercover Boss,” an Emmy Award-winning reality series, follows high-level corporate executives as they slip anonymously into the rank-and-file of their own companies. Each week, a different executive leaves the comfort of their corner office for an undercover mission to examine the inner workings of their corporation. The fourth season of the show kicked off last fall.

2012 Bowl Poll and a “Bipartisan” BOGO Introduces New Market Bowls as Favorite “Candidates” in a Heated Election Season

Boston Market Encourages America to Get Out and Vote

Golden, CO  (Restaurant News Release)  In an effort encouraging America to make its voice heard this campaign season, Boston Market today launched the 2012 Bowl Poll to shine a spotlight on the home-style restaurant chain’s newest menu item, Market Bowls. As Republicans and Democrats battle for The White House, Boston Market’s Bowl Poll is designed to provide an early projection on the election race and citizen sentiment regarding the “Left Wing” and “Right Wing” candidates: the new Market Bowl “candidates,” that is. The heated, online poll asks the public to side with either the “Left Wing” Market Bowl or the “Right Wing” Market Bowl based on their favorite fowl: turkey or chicken. Consumers who visit www.marketbowlpoll.com will be introduced to the candidates, cast their vote and receive a special offer for participating.

The battle of the birds is being fought to highlight the launch of Market Bowls, the brand’s newest, limited-time menu item that includes two gourmet sides and a choice of signature Rotisserie Chicken, Roasted Turkey Breast or Meatloaf. The ingredients are then combined in one, easy-to-eat bowl and topped with Beef Gravy, Poultry Gravy or one of three sauces: Zesty Barbecue (mild); Sweet Thai Chili Garlic (medium hot) and Honey Habanero (medium hot.)

Boston Market is pitting two of America’s most popular proteins, chicken and turkey, in a beak-to-beak battle for the finish. From now until September 16, consumers who cast a vote at www.marketbowlpoll.com will be rewarded with an exclusive “Bipartisan” BOGO coupon valid at any Boston Market restaurant for a free Market Bowl with the purchase of a Market Bowl and a fountain drink. Voting in the 2012 Bowl Poll will take place through November 6, with additional consumer offers provided throughout the election time period. Total online votes will be tallied to determine a winner, and, on November 7, a national Boston Market offer for everyone who voted will be announced along with the winning protein.

“Our 2012 Bowl Poll will determine whether the ‘Left Wing’ Market Bowl or the ‘Right Wing’ Market Bowl rules the roost at Boston Market,” said George Michel, CEO (a.k.a. “The Big Chicken”), Boston Market. “In a year when campaign promises sometimes fall short, these candidates can guarantee consumers will be rewarded come Election Day, no matter which side claims victory as top bird.”

Boston Market Announces Removal of Salt Shakers from Tables, Commits to Reduce Sodium and Focus on Nutritional Improvements

Restaurant Chain Makes Strides to Provide Wholesome Options Diners Can Feel Good About

Boston Market Announces Removal of Salt Shakers from Tables, Commits to Reduce Sodium and Focus on Nutritional Improvements

Boston Market Announces Removal of Salt Shakers from Tables, Commits to Reduce Sodium and Focus on Nutritional Improvements

Golden, CO  (Restaurant News Release)  As part of an overall initiative to provide healthier options for guests, Boston Market today announced that salt shakers have been removed from tables inside all 476 locations. Boston Market also announced a commitment to reduce sodium levels in signature items by 20 percent and to reduce sodium in the company’s menu items by 15 percent by the end of 2014.

In the dining room, guests can still add salt to their food, but they will now need to leave the table to find a shaker, a change aimed at encouraging diners to taste their food before reaching for the salt. Salt shakers will now be available at a central condiment station. In the kitchen, Boston Market will work with research and quality assurance teams to find ways to reduce sodium in the restaurant’s signature rotisserie chicken, mashed potatoes and mac and cheese by 20 percent over the next six months, without sacrificing flavor. On average, Boston Market sells 48 million servings of its signature rotisserie chicken, 24 million servings of its mashed potatoes, and 21.6 million servings of its macaroni and cheese each year.

The effort to address sodium at Boston Market is the latest step in a series of menu modifications that began nearly two years ago. In October 2010, the company began a rollout of several enhancements, including reducing sodium in Boston Market’s signature rotisserie chicken by 20 percent and dropping sodium in the restaurant’s poultry gravy by 50 percent. Since 2011, the chain has also offered guests lighter options on a menu of Meals Under 550 Calories, which offers more than 100 combinations of protein-packed entrees and fresh vegetables. Boston Market Research & Development teams are continually focused on improving the company’s current food options while considering future product innovations and nutrient fortifications.

“As a consumer myself, I too have seen the headlines about the impact sodium can have on our health,” said George Michel, CEO, Boston Market. “By removing salt shakers from Boston Market tables, we hope to raise awareness of salt intake, without completely eliminating the option, to those who dine in our restaurants. Today, we are publicly committing to further reduce sodium from menu items while still delivering the great taste for which Boston Market is known.”

Today’s announcements also underscore Boston Market’s commitment as the first restaurant company to become a national strategic partner with the USDA’s MyPlate program, an initiative designed to help consumers make better food choices by illustrating the five food groups in a familiar visual, a place setting. At ChooseMyPlate.gov, consumers can find practical information and tips to build healthier diets, including balancing calories, which foods to avoid, and which foods to increase. As a national strategic partner, Boston Market will support the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the mission of the USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion.

Next year, Boston Market will explore additional sodium reductions and other nutritional improvements to soups, sandwiches and salads.

“Beyond our 2014 commitments, we recognize that the salt content of our soups and sandwiches needs attention as well,” said Sara Bittorf, chief brand officer, Boston Market. “This announcement and the announcements to follow are a promise to our guests to deliver wholesome foods they can feel good about sharing with their families.”

Guests will notice the removal of salt shakers from tables immediately, and Boston Market will work to roll out reduced-sodium menu items in the coming months to ensure the promise to meet the 2014 deadline is kept.

“By improving the nutritional quality of our food, we hope to raise awareness around making balanced choices,” said Bittorf. “At Boston Market, we believe it’s possible to have great tasting food options that fit with a healthy lifestyle, while leaving room for the occasional indulgence.”
