Subway Restaurants to Expand its New Look to Nearly Half of its U.S. Restaurants by the end of 2020Milford, CT  (Restaurant News Release)  Subway® restaurant guests will notice something different about their favorite sandwich shop – and we’re not just talking about the new menu innovations! More than 10,500 U.S. Subway restaurants will be remodeled with a new exciting design and décor by the end of 2020.

Thanks to a multi-million-dollar grant program that will cover about 25 percent of the redesign costs, Franchise Owners are investing to remodel even more restaurants over the next year. These remodeled locations will join the nearly 1,400 global remodels already completed and the nearly 900 global remodels currently underway.

“Our Franchise Owners and their staffs work hard every day to deliver a great Subway experience for their guests,” said Don Fertman, Chief Development Officer for Subway. “By participating in the remodel program, Franchise Owners are making a commitment to enhancing their guests experience, and showing their trust in the brand. Together, with all that is going on with our global transformation, we are taking this brand to an exciting new level.”

The grant program and continued restaurant transformation is part of the brand’s global effort to deliver the best guest experience. The multi-year global transformation is centered on three key initiatives: updated, modern restaurant redesigns; bold new flavors, tastes and menu options; and greater convenience and enhanced customer service for guests.

Last year, in addition to the new redesign, Subway announced an $80 million investment to emphasize new flavors and create a more personalized guest experience in the restaurants. This new program, free to all Franchise Owners, is already in 14 countries, including France, Brazil, Singapore and Australia. The program features Flavor Stations, with even more flavors guests can use to customize their sandwiches and salads, and Beverage Stations, with such offerings as Tropical Strawberry Lemonade and Pomegranate Limeade. This program will be in all eligible U.S. restaurants this Summer.

In addition, Subway continues its journey to bring new and exciting flavors and beverages to guests. The Ciabatta Collection and Hubert’s Lemonade are the latest in a line of exciting new flavor combinations and tastes guests can only experience at Subway restaurants. This year alone, Subway guests enjoyed the Ultimate Cheesy Garlic Bread, tasted the limited time only cool and spicy flavors of the  Signature Wrap line up, and made their sandwich dreams a reality with freshly-baked King’s Hawaiian bread at select restaurants.

The NEW! Club Collection turns the rules upside down by modernizing these iconic sandwiches with a kick of spicy jalapeños, delicious steak and creamy guacamole.

These crave-worthy, chef-inspired recipes for the Club sandwiches are:

  • The Southwest Chipotle Chicken Club includes chicken strips, bacon, Pepper Jack cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, green peppers, red onions, Chipotle Southwest sauce and guacamole, piled high on Jalapeño Cheddar bread
  • The Steak Club features shaved steak, turkey, bacon, American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and mayonnaise, all on freshly baked bread
  • The American Club features turkey, Black Forest ham, bacon, American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and mayonnaise on Artisan flatbread

Along with these new rule-breaking sandwiches, Subway’s new Club Collection is accompanied by a creative campaign, “Breaking Club Traditions,” created by Subway’s agency of record Dentsu Aegis Network. The campaign brings Subway’s twist on the club to life through scenarios that shake up traditions in other kinds of clubs, such as country clubs, chess clubs and motorcycle clubs and begin airing on April 25.

Subway continues to deliver unexpected flavors to its guests that they cannot find anywhere else, like the Ultimate Cheesy Garlic Bread sandwich and the Green Goddess Tuna Melt. The Club Collection not only brings the heat with a Jalapeño Cheddar bread that is baked fresh with whole jalapeños and Monterey cheese, but it also delivers a trifecta of savory steak, turkey and bacon.

Milford, CT  (Restaurant News Release)  Suzanne Greco, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Subway®, has informed the company’s Shareholders of her intent to retire as CEO. Subway® has appointed Trevor Haynes, Chief Business Development Officer, as interim CEO, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the company, effective today. Mr. Haynes is a member of the Executive Leadership Team and joined Subway® in 2006. Ms. Greco and Mr. Haynes will work together to ensure a smooth transition until Ms. Greco officially retires on June 30, 2018, at which point she will serve as a Senior Advisor to the company.

Ms. Greco, who has been CEO since 2015, joined the company in 1973 as a sandwich artist, although she has been an integral part of the company since the first store opened as a family business in 1965. Prior to her role as CEO, she was part of the Research & Development team for over two decades and was promoted to lead the group as VP of Operations and Research & Development in 2013.

The Shareholders commented, “We would like to express our deep appreciation to Suzanne for her lifetime of service in building Subway into one of the world’s greatest successes. She was there when the first sandwich shop opened, and as CEO she focused on helping the company adapt to a more competitive and dynamic environment. As we work with Suzanne on a smooth transition for the business we cherish, we are grateful for her extraordinary contributions and her insightful and dedicated leadership.  We are optimistic about the brand and look forward to working with the next CEO to ensure a robust future for the company. ”

Ms. Greco noted, “Subway has been part of my life since I was 7 years old. I love the brand and the company, and I always will, but it’s time for me to have more balance in my life. Mr. Haynes is an experienced leader with deep knowledge of the company and has held numerous leadership roles at Subway®. He is well equipped to serve as the interim CEO while the company launches its search for a permanent CEO. He joined Subway® in 2006 as Territory Manager in Australia, moved to the United Kingdom in 2009 to serve as the Senior Area Development Manager for the U.K. and Ireland and in 2014 joined the team in Milford, Connecticut, to serve as the Global Director of Operations. Mr. Haynes received his Master’s degree in International Management from Queensland University of Technology.

Initially introduced in Maine, and tested in key markets across the U.S., the three wraps are now available nationwide. They are:

And, in keeping with Subway’s long history as the leader in customization, guests always have the option to create their own Signature Wrap. “Make It What You Want™” using the wide variety of ingredients available at all Subway restaurants and wrapped up in a flavorful Tomato Basil or Spinach wrap.

The new line of Signature Wraps is Subway’s biggest core menu addition in the U.S. since the introduction of Rotisserie-style Chicken in 2016. And, according to Len Van Popering, who recently joined Subway to fill the newly created role of Vice President of Global Brand Management and Innovation, “this is just the beginning.”
